I started out selling on ebay in May of 2006. I was clueless as how people would find my auctions so I started surfing the web. Well I kept stumbling on auction forums and websites that offered free ebay auction promotions. So I began joining forums and submitting my auctions. Well this quickly became a pain-in-the-ass with passwords, logging in, too much work. I would also submit my auctions via email to some of the more popular sites but sometimes it took them days to post it and many times the auctions would end by then.
That got me thinking... Wouldn't it be cool if you could post your own auctions without logging in, without waiting, without giving my email... So I looked at the other sites and how they were manually posting auctions and noticed that many of them would post a small picture along with some text in a grid format. I began thinking, wow this must be a pain-in-the-butt for them to do this all the time as well.
So I decided to see if I could automate this process. My first hurdle was to figure out how to resize images. So after some googling I was able to find out that it could be done with PHP. Well unfortunately I didn't know PHP but I did understand other programming languages so how hard could it be? So I decided now was the time to learn it.
After I was able to resize images I started to get excited about this new script I was building. I wanted a way to limit the number of boxes in my grid so that I could control the layout of my page. As I was testing I noticed that as I would add more images the previous images would disapear from my page. It occured to me that because I set a limit on the number of boxes in the grid that the last image was being "BUMPED" off the page each time I added a new image.
I thought this "BUMP" effect was really cool. So I began calling it my bump script. Next, I wanted to add text links below the grid so that as the images were being bumped off the page the text links would still be visible on the page. That way as the grid fills older auctions are still on the page.
After some testing and tweeking of the script I had a working version. I was eager to get out this new BUMP Script onto my existing website Bidmyspace.com. Well in just a few short days after installing my BUMP Script I began receiving emails from people asking me where I got this script from. That gave me another idea.
Since I wrote this script to make it easier for me to promote my own auctions, I figured I would sell it in hopes that these other auction promotion websites would buy it for there own websites. It was a win-win for me. I would make a few dollars on the script plus be able to easily BUMP my own auctions on there websites.
I decided that I would need to come up with a new website that was geared toward only my bump script. But I need a name for this new site. Auction + Bump and so AuctionBump.com was born.
Again, after a few days I sold my first bump script, then another and another. It was such a sucess that I began building other bump scripts. I have over a dozen bump scripts to date you can see them all here at AuctionBump.com
This BUMP is on me!
